FLOOD IN THE NIGER DELTA REGION OF NIGERIA

It is no longer a rumor of the endless flood that has always affected the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. In 2012, the worst of it happens that led to properties worth millions of Naira lost including lives. Yet, the issue has not be tamed. Every year, this ugly situation has always plagued this region yet there is no much done about it.

THE 2012 FLOODS IN NIGERIA

In the year 2012, Nigeria witnesses a most disastrous flood ever that has led to lives and properties lost. According to Wikipedia, over 300 people were killed and more than 2000 were displaced. Apart from the Niger Delta Regions, other states that reside along the River Niger and River Benue banks also suffered massively from this natural disaster. During the second quarter of the that said year, the issues of this great flood was all the air, yet the cry of a tortoise was not heard from the forest!

There are different speculation about the cause of these yearly heavy flood in the region. Some said it is due to the rainy season of the region while others said it is due to the underdeveloped system  of drainages and dredging of rivers in the region that has led to such disastrous floods. Now, this year is here, in this same region, this ugly situation has come and many are complaining about it.

It is of course not as worst as the one of year 2012, but there is a saying that a desperate disease deserves a desperate cure.

CURRENT SITUATION

Just as every second quarter of the year, the flood is here again. Communities are yearning for help from the government. In the community of Agbarho in Ughelli North Local Government of Delta State, Nigeria, houses are flooded.

This is just the little I know about the current situation. And I believe there are other regions along the River Niger that are being affected.

SOLUTION

I believe that to put an end to this situation, the individuals and the government have a very crucial role to play. This is beyond the little donation for constructions individuals will do.

Individually, Nigerians has to developed the culture of cleaning their environment, especially drainages around them. A topical drainage in Warri or any other City in the Niger Delta Region have debris deposited in it for years now. No one wants to clean them up even with the numerous monthly sanitation carried out.

On the Government siad, Billions of Naira will have to be spent on dredging of rivers across the country. I believe the Country is wealthy enough to catered for situation like this. We have to developed the love for our own country and invest in it? Even animals in the forest a getting civilized why can't we just love ourselves?

I believe this situations can be attend to as the country get ready to elect a new executives into power comes 2019.
